Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry Lab
Extract, identify, and analyze bioactive compounds from medicinal plants.

Lab Overview
This lab provides hands-on experience in the physicochemical characterization of natural products. Students learn identification tests, extraction, isolation, detection, and quantitative estimation of phytoconstituents from medicinal plants—laying the foundation for herbal drug development and standardization.
Key Equipment & Facilities:
- Soxhlet extractor
- Rotary evaporator
- Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) chamber
- UV transilluminator
- Plant drying oven
- Compound microscope
Learning Outcomes
- Perform macroscopic and microscopic identification of crude drugs.
- Extract alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and glycosides using standard methods.
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening.
- Validate herbal formulations per pharmacopoeial guidelines.
- Understand the therapeutic potential of plant-based medicines.
